First-round in the books, can Vikings’ boys hang on?

Round 1 of the North Coast Section soccer playoffs is in the books.

First a look at the boys before we head to Saturday’s second round:

– Montgomery might be the No. 1 seed, but nothing will come easy. The Vikings knocked off Rancho, 2-0, but the game was at Montgomery and the Cougars were the No. 16 seed.

– Elsie Allen was a disappointment. Sure thought the Lobos would do better at Windsor, but a 4-nil result proved otherwise. Maybe the Jaguars are peaking at the right time.

– Maria Carrillo kind of manhandled Sonoma Valley, 4-1. The Pumas are electric upfront, but they better do better on defense if they are expecting to go deep into this tournament.

– Cardinal Newman suprised Ukiah, 1-0. But the Cardinals hardly ever roll over in the postseason.

– In Div. II, Cloverdale, St. Vincent, Willits and Fort Bragg all posted rather surprising first-round wins. That was very good.

– And in Div. III, No. 6 Sonoma Academy stopped Contra Costa Christian. The Coyotes are the only Empire rooting interest left in that Division.

– Div. I went according to the script, all the higher seeded teams advanced and all posted shutouts. Beware of the Gauchos. They beat McKinleyville 8-0 and seem to be out to prove they belong with the elite teams. I wouldn’t want to be facing Casa Grande next.

– In Div. III, we have three Empire teams alive – RVC, St. Helena and Clear Lake. I’d say any of those three might go far in the tournament.

Saturday predictions to come later on Friday. Stay tuned.
