The North Coast Section girls volleyball tournament begins tonight with North Bay League co-champs Rancho Cotate and Maria Carrillo among the Redwood Empire teams in action.
Rancho Cotate (30-7), the No. 4 seed in Div. II, hosts No. 13 Dougherty Valley (15-18) from the Diablo Valley League. The San Ramon team is on a three-game winning streak while the Cougars have captured seven straight and 13 of 14.

No. 5 Maria Carrillo (27-9), winner of three of the last five Div. II titles, welcomes No. 12 American (9-8) of the Mission Valley League. The Eagles have dropped their last three. The Pumas lost a five-setter to Rancho in the second annual NBL tournament last Thursday.
Analy, the Sonoma County League winner, is seeded No. 5 and drew an opening round bye in Div. III. The Tigers will take their 23-10 record to Albany on Saturday for a quarter-final match. No. 4 Albany is 27-5 and champion of the Bay Shore League.
Edna Monroe, Rancho’s coach, has tried without success to get a scouting report on Dougherty Valley.

“The coaches I know from the Bay Area didn’t have any information and I couldn’t find much on the Internet,” Monroe said. “It’s been business as usual at our practices this week. We worked on fundamentals, focusing as a team and on goal-oriented drills.”
The teams have one common opponent. Rancho beat College Park in straight sets in the Top of the Bay Tournament while Dougherty Valley lost to the Pleasant Hill team in five sets.
Besides Rancho and Carrillo, 13 other Redwood Empire teams will begin their title quests tonight.
Two other area teams have opening round Div. II games. No. 6 Casa Grande (19-12) hosts No. 11 Clayton Valley (13-19) and No. 10 Ukiah (15-6) travels to No. 7 Washington (25-13).

Six of the seven teams from the SCL made the tournament and two of those will see action in Div. III games. No. 7 Petaluma (11-9) hosts No. 12. Acalanes (15-16) and No. 9 Sonoma Valley (16-15) journeys to No. 8 Terra Linda (17-13). Petaluma was the Div. II winner last year.
Six teams from the Empire have Div. IV games tonight: No. 5 El Molino (28-9) will be home for No. 12 Ursuline (16-14), No. 7 St. Helena (25-3) entertains No. 10 Healdsburg (20-15), No. 8 Willits (21-12) hosts No. 9 Justin-Siena (13-15) and No. 14 Cloverdale (17-14) goes to No. 3 Salesian (24-8).

After winning the Div. VI title last year, Rincon Valley Christian moved up to Div. V and received the No. 10 seed. The Eagles (24-7) host No. 7 St Joseph Notre Dame (18-14 from the Bay Shore League).

Two other area teams play Div. V games tonight. No. 13 Upper Lake (5-16) goes to No. 4 College Prep (15-7) while No. 14 Calistoga (13-8) has a date at No. 3 S.F. University (20-8).

The Empire’s only top-seeded team — Anderson Valley — has a bye in Div. VI. In Saturday’s quarter-final round, the North Central II-North champs (21-8) be at home for the winner of tonight’s game between No. 8 Rio Lindo Adventist Academy (15-9) and No. 9 California School for the Deaf (17-2).
All games tonight begin at 7.
