On the strength of winning the North Coast Section large school girls’ soccer title, Casa Grande finished No. 20 in the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll.

Maria Carrillo, the team Casa Grande defeated in the section finals, was ranked No. 8 in the final West Region poll. Casa Grande was No. 3 in that ranking.

Casa Grande, from the Sonoma County League, had not been ranked nationally this season until entering the final Top 25.

Scoring 18 goals and shutting out all four opponents in the section playoffs demonstrated how strong the Gauchos played when it counted most.

For two weeks earlier in the season, Maria Carrillo, out of the North Bay League, was ranked No. 1 in both the national and west polls. The Pumas were nationally ranked for ten weeks in all.

Other area teams to make the West Region poll were the Montgomery girls at No. 14 for a week, and the Montgomery boys, ranked three different weeks including a high of No. 12. The Vikings’ boys won the section large school title after taking the North Bay League.

The national association, based in Kansas City, Kan., has more than 30,000 members who coach at the high school and college level. NSCAA operates a nationwide program of clinics and week-long courses.
