Fujii scores 35 in Analy victory


Max Fujii followed up his 36-point performance on Monday with a 35-point barrage on Tuesday as Analy rallied to defeat Mission Prep, 56-52, in the San Diego Holiday Classic.
Fujii saved his best for last on Tuesday in San Diego. The 5-foot-9 senior drained 15 points in the final quarter as the Tigers battled back after trailing by seven with eight minutes to play.

“We played sloppy for three quarters and with no energy,” Fujii said. “We started getting a little energy in the third and then just rode it in the fourth.
“We all got more aggressive. I made a couple of clean threes and then things started going our way.”

The Tigers play Brea Olindo (8-5) tonight at 7 p.m. in the semifinals of the Governor’s division at Rancho Bernardo High School.

Mission Prep led 19-15 after one quarter and 34-29 at halftime.
While Fujii was carrying the offense in the final quarter, the defense came alive and held the San Luis Obispo team to seven points.

Fujii, who came into the tournament averaging 25 points per game, nailed six 3-point goals against Mission Prep and had seven on Monday against Tesoro.
Montgomery, playing in the Senator’s division at Cathedral Catholic High School, lost to El Cerrito, 61-53, on Tuesday. It was the Vikings’ first loss in nine games.

El Cerrito led all the way and had a 12-point lead going into the fourth quarter.
Alec Kobre had 22 for Montgomery while Zack Templeton added 11 and Ben Freeland 10.

“They used a three-quarter press on us and for some reason,we had a hard time with that,” coach Tom Fitchie said. “We must’ve had 20 turnovers. We should’ve handled it better.”
The Vikings play Palmdale Knight at 5 p.m. today.
Casa Grande advanced to the semi-finals of the Don Baumbauer Memorial at Marin Catholic with a 72-50 win over Sacramento Grant.

The Gauchos play University (Irvine) at 6:30 p.m. tonight.
Josh Hayworth led the way against Grant with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Joey Rodriguez added 15, to go along with eight assists and four steals.
