Second team 2010 All Nor-Cal High School Cross-Country selections for Luis Luna, of Piner, and Forrest Shaffer, from Petaluma, highlight Empire runners picked among the region’s best this season.

Forrest Shaffer

Still just a junior, Luna was the Empire’s best boys runner. After winning the North Bay League title, he added the North Coast Section Division 3 championship and a 6th place at the California state meet. Luna finished 23rd in the prestigious Foot Locker West Regionals.

Shaffer, a senior, was the Sonoma County League champion and runner up to Luna at the section meet. He finished 10th in the state finals.

The pair’s times at the state meet were the 8th and 9th fastest Empire boys’ marks ever over the 3.1 mile Woodward Park course in Fresno.

Two of Shaffer’s teammates received honorable mention recognition, Ryan Douglas and Kevin Poteracke. Both sophomores, Douglas was 4th at the NCS meet and 30th in the state finals while Poteracke finished 5th at the sectionals and 28th in the state meet.

Petaluma won the NCS Division 3 team title with Piner taking fourth.

The top Empire girls’ runner was Lauren Kraus, a Maria Carrillo sophomore named to the third team. Injured for the league finals, she bounced back to finish 3rd in the section race and 14th at the state finals.

Sonoma County league champion Ashley Moffett, a Casa Grande sophomore, received honorable mention after winning the section race and finishing 28th in the state meet.

Also earning honorable mention was Julie Nacouzi, the Montgomery senior who won the Foot Locker West Regionals and followed that great effort with an even stronger 3rd place finish in the national finals. Nacouzi sat out much of the season and didn’t run in the league, section or state finals.

The teams were selected by representatives from the various prep sports geographic sections in Northern California.
