The second week of prep wrestling’s dual meet season features matchups of early favorites and teams expected to challenge for league titles.

Maria Carrillo, third in last season’s North Bay League tournament, takes on defending champion Rancho Cotate. Always tough Casa Grande goes to El Molino, a team that could push Healdsburg for the top spot in the Sonoma County League.

After a strong showing against Cardinal Newman in week one, Maria Carrillo faces a far more difficult test against Rancho Cotate. Leading the Pumas are: Zach Forgy, second in the league last season at 171 pounds; Sam Clarke, third last year at 140 pounds; Nathan Edelstein, among the best at 189 pounds; and Sam Tonascia, at 145 pounds.

The Cougars, who started strong with a win over Ukiah,  have a trio ranked among the North Coast Section’s best:  Vincent Luis, No. 8 at 112 pounds;  Joey Clay, No. 7 at 125 pounds; and Matt Rossiter, No. 7  for 189 pounds.

The Casa Grande-El Molino match features wrestlers ranked among the state’s best. Blake Borges, No. 23 in California at 130 pounds, leads El Molino. Jack Fausone, No. 37 in the state at 145 pounds, is a point producer for Casa Grande. Another pair is ranked among the section’s top wrestlers: Sean O’Brien, at 135 pounds for Casa Grande, and Jared Garner, at 189 pounds for El Molino.

The Gauchos opened the league season with a win over Analy. El Molino easily handled Petaluma.

Wednesday’s Sonoma County League matches: Windsor at Analy; Petaluma at Sonoma Valley; Casa Grande at El Molino.

North Bay League matches Wednesday: Cardinal Newman at Santa Rosa; Ukiah at Piner; Elsie Allen at Montgomery; Maria Carrillo at Rancho Cotate.
