Realizing a dream to play top level college soccer, John McFarlin is a Loyola Marymount Lion after the Santa Rosa high standout signed a National Letter of Intent with the school on Wednesday.

All-Empire Large School Most Valuable Player a year ago, the powerful midfielder will have to work hard for minutes at Loyola. The Lions return much of the team that tied for the West Coast Conference’s top spot .

McFarlin has come a long ways. Not a big player, McFarlin used strength training to help him play more physical, complementing great skills.

Ahead of his senior year, McFarlin played on the Sonoma County Sol, a developmental team for professional soccer in the United States. McFarlin is back with the Sol to improve his fitness and skills before heading to Loyola in the fall.

Wednesday opens the formal signing period for student athletes playing fall sports at NCAA Division I and Division II schools.
