SRU aiming for trio of girls State Cup titles

The magic number for Santa Rosa United girls teams on Saturday is three. As in three State Cup titles. Two of the California Youth Soccer Association variety and one for the NorCal’s version of a State Cup.

Playing in the CYSA North U12 finals will be SRU Ice. Ice, coached by Jim Strong, will face the Belmont Legends at 3 p.m. Saturday on the artificial turf surface at Elk Grove.

Earlier in the day (11 a.m.) at the same site, head coach John Gilson will take his U13 Freeze into the finals against the Danville Mustang Xplosion. A majority of the Freeze players will be headed to Maria Carrillo in the near future.

The winners of those two games will advance to the USYSA Far West Regionals in June at Boise, Idaho.

The SRU U11 Tremors, coached by Martin Perez, will be at a different site, Woodland, playing under the umbrella of NorCal soccer. They will face Manteca FC Newcastle in their championship game at 1:30 p.m.

Unlike the CYSA tournament, there is no mirror champion from the southern part of the state and the winner of Saturday’s NorCal title game does not advance to a regional event.
