SRJC men, women win in NorCal second round


The Santa Rosa Junior College men’s basketball team won its second-round game of the NorCal Regionals, defeating Sequoias, 73-57, on Friday night at Haehl Pavilion in Santa Rosa.

Sama Taku scored a season-high 24 points, doubling his season scoring average, to lead SRJC.

The Bear Cubs led 39-30 at halftime. Sequoias put up a fight in the second half, but Taku and Tim Oswald both hit key 3-pointers in the second half to keep the Bear Cubs comfortably in the lead.

Oswald scored 14 points and Lorenzo McCloud added 11 points for the Bear Cubs.

Rob Walters led Sequoias with 20 points.

Santa Rosa JC, which improved its record to 21-8, advances to the quarterfinals, where they will meet the winner of tonight’s game between Canada and San Jose City.

If San Jose City wins, the Bear Cubs will host the game at Haehl Pavilion. If Canada wins, it will host.


At Santa Rosa, former Empire standouts Mia Greco and Jen Tsurumoto both scored 14 points to lead the SRJC women to a 68-40 victory against Laney in the second round of the NorCal Regionals on Friday night at Haehl Pavilion.

Marie Sweet added 11 points for SRJC, while Ashley Morgan had five points, four steals and four assists and Jade Hudson had 12 rebounds.

The Bears Cubs will host a quarterfinal game on Wednesday against the winner of tonight’s game between San Joaquin Delta and Solano.

SRJC improved its record to 24-6.
