It’s amazing that in less than three years, Maria Carrillo’s Kristina Schmuhl has become the best prep female golfer in the Redwood Empire. That is until you realize that her father, Jason, is the pro at Windsor Golf Club and has competed in such events as the PGA Championship, AT&T at Pebble Beach and the Reno-Tahoe Open.

Now a junior, she plays at a five handicap for nine holes (a regulation high school match) and this past season that was four strokes better than any other girl in the Empire.

Besides her dad, her co-coaches at Carrillo, Jerry Deakins and Will Parker, have helped her development. Schmuhl, who is 5-foot-7, drives the ball around 230 yards.

“Kristina’s worth ethic is great,” Parker said. “We do short game drills a lot and it can get tedious. Kristina is always the one telling her teammates to keep concentrating and work hard. She leads by example.”
