Eight Empire wrestlers headed to state

Adam Hendrickson is heading to Bakersfield after winning the 135-pound weight class at the North Coast Section wrestling championships. He won’t make the trip alone.

Healdsburg's Adam Hendrickson

Healdsburg made a strong showing at the tournament in Newark on Saturday, sending four wrestlers to the state championships next week. Joining Hendrickson are Ricardo Sandoval (first at 171 pounds), Matthew Tsarnas (second at 152) and Eric Chavez (fourth at 285).

The top four finishes in each class advance to Bakersfield.

Other Empire qualifiers included Windsor’s Andres Torres (second at 112 pounds), Rancho Cotate’s Anthony Navarro (second at 171), Casa Grande’s Jack Fausone (third at 145) and Clear Lake’s Robbie Hammers (fourth at 152).

Hendrickson gutted out the victory despite an injured shoulder that seems to be getting worse. No word yet on his readiness for the state championships.

Torres had his sights set on the NCS title, but lost in overtime to top-seeded Joe Martinez of De La Salle in the final.

“It was a good, tight match that went back and forth a couple different ways,” Windsor coach Rich Carnation said. “And obviously from our standpoint we thought a few calls should have gone the other way. But that’s the ebb and flow of a match.”

“All you can control is what shape you’re in, and your level of efficiency,” the coach said. “Andres could have gone another five or 10 minutes.”

Carnation knows that if Torres doesn’t win in Bakersfield, it won’t be for lack of conditioning. He said the wrestler could have gone another 5-10 minutes in Saturday’s final match.
