Sonoma County Cagers

Coming off a memorable season, Montgomery High School boys’ basketball coach Tom Fitchie looks to groom a new generation of players for the region through a youth program.

Fitchie and Montgomery assistant Brian Long are leading the Sonoma County Cagers, a competitive boys’ club program for third graders on up to high school juniors.

Player assessments will be held Sunday at Montgomery high.

The club’s goal is providing organized instruction on fundamental skills and team play for young athletes committed to hard work, Fitchie said.

“I am very excited to get this going. I think Santa Rosa is overdue for this format,” Fitchie said.

Running from April through July, the program aims to field two teams in each of nine age groups. Teams will practice twice weekly and play in one to two tournaments a month.

Recognizing youths might play more than one sport, the club will attempt to accommodate schedules to encourage participation.

Sunday’s player assessment schedule at Montgomery high: 3rd/4th/5th/6th grade 2-2:30 p.m.; 8th/9th/10th/11th grade 3:30-5 p.m.

The cost is $600 or a one time payment of $500. There is a $50 non-refundable registration cost and $75 uniform fee.
