Semenero helps Pomona advance in NCAA tournament

With former Sonoma Valley high star Sarah Semenero helping lead the way, Cal Poly Pomona is headed to the NCAA Division II women’s basketball final eight.

Semenero earned All-Tournament honors as Cal Poly Pomona captured the West Region title with three wins on the Broncos home floor. Bettering her season numbers, Semenero averaged 10 points and 9 rebounds in the victories.

Cal Poly Pomona – champions of the California Collegiate Athletic Association — now head for St. Joseph, Mo., to compete in the Elite Eight stage of the NCAA Division II Tournament. The Broncos face Northwest Missouri State on Tuesday.

A junior, Semenero is joined on the Cal Poly Pomona team by Charlene Popoff, from Windsor High School, and Kaitlin Derby, out of Petaluma High School.

The former Sonoma County League rivals each were All-Empire players as high school seniors.
