5, including Amman, sign with SSU women’s team

Sonoma State women’s soccer coach Luke Oberkirch announced this week that he has signed five players for the 2011 season.

They include Gretel Amman and Elena Catania, former Montgomery High teammates who have transferred in from Div. 1 programs; Kareli Rodriguez, also a Montgomery product; Margi Osmundson, Casa Grande; and Carolyn Greco, an all-league player at Fullerton Union High School in Fullerton.

Why Amman would leave San Diego State after starting 41 games over the past seasons and why Catania would leave Cal State Fullerton we’ll ask them later. But the losses at both of those schools are SSU’s gain.

Catania can score and Amman can control the back-line.

The speedy Rodriquez should improve during her collegiate career and we don’t know a thing about Greco.

But the surprise of the signings just might be Osmundson. She matriculated under Vinny Cortezzo with the Gauchos, she’s tough, soccer-saavy and a leader.

Time will tell, but look for Margi to become the best player of this five-pack.
