Elsie Allen Hosts Santa Rosa in Benefit Rugby Match

A league title out of reach, the Elsie Allen and Santa Rosa rugby clubs will battle for bragging rights in the annual Jesse Williams Cup rugby match Friday.

Williams was a former Santa Rosa club player who was killed in Iraq in April 2007, holding the rank of Army staff sergeant. The game — set for 7 p.m. at Elsie Allen High — raises money for his 4-year-old daughter Amaya’s college fund.

Expect a close match and solid sportsmanship with both squads filled with players from several schools. Elsie Allen also has players from Santa Rosa and Analy. Santa Rosa has many players from Cardinal Newman.

The teams compete in the Redwood Empire Conference, in addition to participating in numerous tournaments.

This season’s conference champion is Marin, from Redwood High, which advances to the Northern California Youth Rugby Association playoffs.

Elsie Allen clinched second in the Redwood Empire Conference with Santa Rosa third and Montgomery fourth.
