SR High hires Garcia to lead boys team

A new era of  boys soccer has begun at Santa Rosa High with the hiring of Antonio Garcia to lead the team in 2011.

Garcia takes over for Jon Schwan who has taken over a similar post at Montgomery High.

Garcia, an Ohio State University graduate who played at Santa Rosa Junior College for a year, is now working toward his Master’s degree at USF and coaching a couple of boys teams for Santa Rosa United. He is a quality selection by the Panthers.

He finished his high school career at Montgomery with a pair of North Coast Section titles and anchored a stellar defense on an SRU Heat team in the ’90s that won multiple CYSA North State Cup titles.

“I’m very excited about this,” said Garcia, who played one season at SRJC before moving on to play midfield for three seasons with the Buckeyesd. “I really enjoy coaching high school soccer. We’ll start later in the summer but in the meantime the players will have to understand that passing the physical and having the grades to play are the most important things now. A lot of teams lose games because of those two factors by having players who aren’t eligible for one of those reasons.”

Garcia has previously coached Reseland Prep’s boys team and he appears to be a wise choice by the Panthers’ adminisration to whom Corner Kicks says, “Well done!”
