Petaluma Team To Beat In SCL Softball

Grabbing a road win over Casa Grande gives Petaluma a perfect Sonoma County League mark through the first half of league play.

Behind steady pitching from Sara Soares and Gina Barnacle’s two hits and three runs batted in, the Trojans handed the Gauchos their first SCL defeat Thursday. Michelle Ginn had a double and run batted in for Casa Grande.

Petaluma was the favorite coming into league play and could be the best in the North Bay. Soares is the ace and one of the top hitters on a potent offense led by catcher-shortstop Chelsea Martin, Second baseman-first baseman Barnacle and catcher-center fielder T.J. Watts.

Casa Grande and Analy, with pitching to contend, follow Petaluma in the league standings.

Leading the Gauchos is the pitching duo of Ashley Porter and Ashley Ludlow and top hitters centerfielder Stephanie Sack, shortstop Michelle Ginn and Carli Reinhard at third base.

Pitching ace Michelle Ochoa, shortstop Megan Winters and outfielder Maria Ragusa lead Analy.

Windsor’s win over Sonoma Valley on Thursday evened the Jaguars with the Dragons in the league standings. El Molino defeated Healdsburg to keep the Lions a game ahead of the Greyhounds.

The league’s round robin schedule has Petaluma and Casa Grande wrapping up SCL play with the teams’ second meeting, at Petaluma. If the Trojans and Gauchos win out until that contest, Casa Grande would still have a shot at a share of the SCL title.

The second half of the SCL softball season starts Tuesday: Analy at El Molino; Petaluma at Windsor; Healdsburg at Sonoma Valley. Casa Grande has the bye. Game times are 4 p.m.

Standings (League/Overall)

Analy 4-2/7-6

Windsor 3-3/6-7

Sonoma Valley 3-3/7-6

El Molino 1-5/3-7

Healdsburg 0-6/2-12
