Johnson, Luna among Viking winners


Piner juniors Kyra Johnson and Luis Luna took home a fair amount mother lode of gold medals at the 22nd Annual Viking Track Classic at Montgomery High on Saturday.
Johnson finished her day with a new meet record in the 300 meter hurdles, running the Redwood Empire’s third fastest time ever at 44.68. Prior to that Johnson won the 400 in 58.78. She started and added to her great day by starting the meet off with an Empire best in the 100 hurdles, finishing second in 16.78 to Amelia King of University’s 16.73.
“After my personal best in the 300’s I now feel like I can compete with anyone in the North Coast Section,” said Johnson.
Teammate Luna had a stellar day of his own, first winning the 1600 in the Empire’s eighth best time ever at 4:14.17, then returning to win the 3200 in 9:37.34. “I wanted to go out fast in the first half of the 1600,” said Luna, which he definitely did with an opening lap of 60 seconds.
Possibly the best match-up of the day came in the girl’s sprints as Montgomery’s Alyssa Page took on defending state qualifier Lilla McMillan of Tamalpais. Page won the 100 in a meet record 12.38 to McMillan’s 12.41. The tables were then turned in the 200 as McMillan broke the meet record in 24.99 to Page’s 25.02. “I knew McMillan had made state last year but I knew I had to just think about my own race,” said Page following the 100, “I felt strong and focused for that race.”
Another meet record was erased by Urban’s Cole Williams who won the 800 in 1:53.30.
Mt. Diablo’s Diquan Matison was a double winner taking the long (22-3¼) and triple jump (44-10).
Maria Carrillo’s Kathleen Durand had a huge throw in the discus, winning at 128-6, sixth best all-time Empire mark.
A number of other Empire bests came from winning performances by:
Santa Rosa’s Travis Baker (discus 155-10), Sadia Ibrahim (2:16.82 800), and their girls relays (51.57, 4:04.43) and Maria Carrillo’s Natalie Wolfe (long jump 16-8¼ ) and Rancho Cotate’s boys relays (43.97, 3:28.10).
Other local winners included: Boys: Paul Carrol, Maria Carrillo (11.40 100); Andrew Kozel, Healdsburg (22.51 200); Michael Puccetti, Rancho Cotate (51.35 400); Adam Lundquist, Casa Grande (15.44 110HH); Caleb Cunha, Fort Bragg (39.65 300IH); Schuyler Slaydon, Petaluma (6-2 HJ).
