Casa Grande Leads SCL Into Boys Golf Postseason Tournaments

Summer tournaments and strong fall training paid off for Casa Grande in an undefeated run to the Sonoma County League boys’ golf title.
Monday’s league tournament will help the Gauchos prepare for the NCS Tournament of Champions. Petaluma and Healdsburg hope good outings will carry them into the postseason. A handful of other top league golfers are aiming for individual berths.
”This is the best team I’ve had. The boys dedicated to work hard. They worked together a lot,” said Casa Grande coach Phil Emswiler.
Returning All-Empire golfer Daniel DalPoggetto leads a fearsome foursome for the Gauchos including Corey Ghiringhelli, Sean O’Shea and Taylor Battaglia.
Petaluma forged a tie for second by defeating Healdsburg on Thursday. If Petaluma finishes second Monday, the Trojans gain a spot in the NCS Qualifier. Second place for Healdsburg means an automatic berth in the small school finals, but the Greyhounds should get in even finishing third.
The league’s most improved team, Healdsburg won only one match the prior two seasons.
“For us, this season was a big push up. They’re playing well,” said Healdsburg coach Grady Wann. “You have to build up teams to where you can have five guys score low.”
Leading the Greyhounds have been Alex Wood and Kenny Anderson. The Trojans ace is Matt Mederios.
Beyond the battle for second, Monday’s final will be a scramble for the league’s four individual section qualifying berths.
Should Petaluma and Healdsburg join Casa Grande in postseason tournaments, the other top golfers are: Jason Brendel and Will Cinque, Windsor; Joe Douglass and Ryan Yoast, El Molino; Tucker Williams and Mike O’Daniel, Analy; and A. J. Vitorelo, Sonoma Valley.
