Leading the El Molino boys’ basketball team next season will be Ruben Noles, who resigned as head coach for Elsie Allen High after last season.

Noles takes over from Eugene Patterson, who resigned because of work and to spend more time with his family.

“With the support and the boosters, I thought it would be a pretty good opportunity,” Noles said.

El Molino officials said the boys’ basketball program is in good hands.

“Ruben brings both experience and success to our program,” said Athletic Director Mike Roan. “We appreciate the hard work coach Eugene Patterson and his staff put into the program and we look

Noles, an office manager in Santa Rosa, left Elsie Allen after nine years. Noles said the time away from the game made him recognize he still wanted to coach a high school team.

“I’ve got a renewed sense of what I want to do,” he said.

That work starts this summer with both the El Molino varsity and junior varsity. The teams will compete in the Santa Rosa Junior College summer league and in tournaments at Sonoma State, San Jose State and Healdsburg.

“We have a ton of talent. I was more surprised by that than anything else,” Nole said.

The Lions return two starters and a handful of players.

“We’re young, but I know we’re going to be fine. We’re going to be pretty good this year,” Noles said.

A winning record is one goal. Another is finishing in the top half of the Sonoma County League.

“I think it will be pretty easy having some success,” Noles said.
