LARGE SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL

PLAYER OF THE YEAR
JORDAN HENRY, Ursuline, senior

Stop shooting? Ursuline senior guard Jordan Henry has never had a coach give her those instructions.

As a result, Henry, from CYO through high school, has also never had a problem with shooting. And shooting. And shooting …

“I’ve just always kind of done it until I can’t do it anymore,” Henry said.

Until her hand hurts? “Exactly,” she said with a laugh. “Until my hand falls off.”

Good thing for Ursuline that Henry’s right hand stayed intact this season. The North Bay League MVP averaged 21.7 points, drained 71 three-pointers and shot 82 percent from the free-throw line to lead the Bears to an 18-10 record and earn recognition as the Empire’s Large School Player of the Year.

Thanks to her exploits, the 5-foot-9 Henry has signed with Division I Portland State, which earned a berth in the NIT tournament this past season after reaching the NCAA tournament in 2009.

Ursuline coach Jeff Paul said Henry has always had a deadly three-point shot, but she’s worked diligently since her sophomore season to diversify her game. Paul said the labor paid off fully this past season as Henry, with teams working to take away her outside game, was able to effectively drive to the basket. “Her senior year she really put it all together,” Paul said.

Not that she didn’t find plenty of opportunities to shoot from outside, of course.

“When I was younger I just never really thought about not shooting and that just kind of carried over,” Henry said. “The coaches have always given me the green light to shoot. I’ve really never thought to not do it.”
