2010-11 All-Empire Large School Boys Basketball

LARGE SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL

PLAYER OF THE YEAR
MAX FUJII, Analy, senior

As a freshman, Max Fujii never dreamed of leading Analy to its first North Coast Section title or becoming the leading scorer in school history. His goals were considerably more modest. Almost puny, really.

“Just to make the JV team, probably,” Fujii said. “That was my first goal coming in. Just to make the team.”

As it turns out, Fujii made his team one of the Empire’s best during a remarkable three-year run during which he led the Tigers to an NCS crown as a sophomore, earned all-state honors as a junior and led the area with a career-high 23.2 points a game to cap his career with his second straight Empire Player of the Year honor.

At 5-foot-9 and about 150 pounds, Fujii never wowed opponents with his size. But he added noticeable bulk to his wiry frame in preparation for his senior season. And Tigers coach Brett Page said it allowed Fujii to, at times, carry an inexperienced team on his back.

“Last year I remember him trying to split guys and drive the middle and if he got hit he would be misdirected,” Page said. “This year he could go through that sort of traffic and still go where he wanted to.”

Fujii never fully recovered from a late-season wrist injury that caused him to miss two games, but he still guided 20-10 Analy to the NCS semifinals and a third consecutive trip to the NorCal playoffs.

A student with a 4.0 GPA, he is considering playing next season at Sonoma State or Santa Rosa Junior College or, possibly, walking on at a Division I school.
