Cousins To Lead Healdsburg High Girls’ Basketball

Adding girls’ basketball to his resume, Healdsburg softball coach Brian Osborn will lead the Greyhounds’ hoops team with former freshman coach Jimmy Gonnella this season.
The pair, cousins who grew up in Santa Rosa, take over from Jackie Sellards, who stepped down to spend more time with her family.
“I wanted to jump in and he wanted to move up too. We work really well together,” Osborn said.
With nine seniors returning, Healdsburg should improve on last season’s 10-15 mark, including a winless Sonoma County League campaign. Nine of those losses were by 10 points or less, Osborn said.
“We’ve just got to find a way to win those close games. It will be just hard core basketball,” Osborn said.
Posting winning records overall and in league play are the goals. A North Coast Section playoff berth would be nice, Osborn said.
“We’re going to push that to the kids. Because once you get in the playoffs you’re record means nothing,” Osborn said.
The coaches will emphasize defense first. Depth will be important because Healdsburg will play with energy, Osborn said.
“We’re just going to try and bring as much positive energy as we can,” Osborn said. “Almost everyone will get on the floor. Everyone’s going to have a job to do.”
Both coaches bring experience from lower levels. Osborn, a Healdsburg High history teacher, coached the Greyhounds girls’ freshman and then junior varsity teams four seasons before taking over the softball program seven years ago. Gonnella coached the girls’ freshman team the past two seasons.
The cousins grew up together playing sports and talk sports whenever they get together. Now they will be on the sideline together.
“Everything will be done together. It’s going to be different. It will be fun though,” Osborn said. “Egos don’t get in the way.”
