All-Empire girls wrestler of the year: Kayla Aggio

Rancho Cotate’s Kayla Aggio didn’t accomplish her goal of winning back-to-back CIF championships, but she did more than enough to earn All-Empire Female Wrestler of the Year.

The 2011 season saw Aggio capture her second straight NCS title and the junior wasn’t disgraced at the state meet.

She settled for third after losing 3-2 to eventual champ Emily Hamel of Merced in the semifinals of the 138-pound division.

Aggio dominated her opponents in the regular season and NCS, taking a 27-0 record

into the state meet where she had won the 132-pound division in 2010.

Aggio got payback against Hamel, also a junior, two weeks later in a major meet in Fresno.

Then, the Rohnert Park resident went to Oklahoma City where she finished third at Nationals. Jenna Burkert of Michigan beat Aggio in the semis and then captured the weight division. Burkert is conditioning this summer at a U.S. Olympic training facility.

Meanwhile, Aggio will be honing her skills this summer at the Nor-Cal Fighting Alliance gym in Santa Rosa and will also be attending a wrestling camp.

Her high school coach, Gary Soto, wants her to work on technique and freestyle wrestling.
Aggio has her sights set on another CIF title in 2012 and she knows Hamel will be on the mat waiting for her.
