All-Empire boys wrestler of the year: Adam Hendrickson

After going unbeaten in Sonoma County League and finishing first in the 135-pound division of North Coast Section, Healdsburg’s Adam Hendrickson was a no-brainer choice for All-Empire boys wrestler of the year.

However, the junior will always remember 2011 as the year a shoulder injury cost him a chance to win the CIF State Championship.

Hendrickson suffered tendon and muscle damage on the final day of NCS. In a Feb. 26 match, an opponent took him to the mat and then landed on his shoulder. Despite losing all strength in the shoulder, Hendrickson captured NCS gold for the second straight year.

The following weekend at the state meet in Bakersfield, Hendrickson still had a “dead” shoulder. However, he managed to take sixth place despite having to retire in two matches and defaulting in another.

He won 39 of 43 matches, but will have to wait until 2012 to get another chance at a state title.

“His success under those circumstances truly was remarkable,” coach Scott Weidemier said. “It was a testament to just how good a wrestler Adam is.

“His work ethic, overall conditioning and mental strength … got him through that meat grinder. The other great thing about Adam this year is that he really became a leader and as the season went on, his work ethic and fun personality began to permeate the team.”

Healdsburg repeated as SCL champions.
