Malvino headed to Junior Olympic regionals

Recent Montgomery High graduate Mariano Malvino isn’t done with youth sports yet. He competed in the USATF Junior Olympic Track and Field quarterfinal meet at James Logan High School in Union City last weekend, and took second in both the shot put (48’11”) and the discus (147’).

Those throws did not equal Malvino’s best – he had marks of 51’0.25” in the shot and 150’7.5” in the discus this year, both top-three in the North Bay League – but were good enough to qualify him for the Junior Olympic Region 14 Championships, which will be held in Stockton from July 8-10.

The 2011 USATF Junior Olympic national championships are scheduled for Wichita, Kan., from July 26-31.
