Bertolero to play basketball at Holy Names

Former Cardinal Newman basketball player Alan Bertolero will play at Holy Names University in Oakland this fall, the school announced recently.

Bertolero was a role player in 2010-11, averaging 1.3 points and 1.8 rebounds a game as a senior for a Cardinals team that finished 24-6. But Holy Names coach J. Omar Sanchez clearly looked beyond the numbers for this recruit.

“I see Alan doing the intangibles,” Sanchez said. “These things might not show up on the stat sheet, but coaches love to see them. Alan has great size for a guard and will fit our physical style of play next season.”

Bertolero was listed at 6-foot-2, 185 pounds on the Cardinal Newman roster. He volunteered at a family support center during his senior season, and organized a group of students and parents to help build a school in El Salvador.

Bertolero plans to major in sports biology at Holy Names.
