All-Stars ready for Saturday night

Matt Tomlin will be trying to make history in tonight’s Kiwanis All-Star football game when he coaches the Sonoma County League against the North Bay League.

In the event’s 38-year history, it’s doubtful there’s been a coach that’s led one league to victory and then returned the following year to win with the other all-star squad.

That’s the feat Tomlin is trying to accomplish after guiding the NBL team to a decisive 36-7 victory in 2010. He’ll be on the opposite sideline this year.

And Tomlin has an abundance of talent at his disposal. His roster includes two players going to Division I schools in the fall and nine others that were first-team All-Empire this past season.

A change in jobs enabled Tomlin to move from one side of the field to the other. He resigned as head coach of Piner High (NBL) several months ago to accept the offensive coordinator post at Windsor (SCL).

The Kiwanis game is for seniors that graduated earlier this year and kickoff is at 8 p.m. at Santa Rosa High’s Nevers Field.

Both Tomlin’s Division I players graduated from Casa Grande. Strong safety/wide receiver Makena Garrigan will play for Nevada-Reno in the fall while quarterback Nick Sherry will suit up for UNLV.

Three other Gauchos — wide receiver Anthony Poole and linebackers Mike Ielmorini and Jonathon Cole — will also see action tonight.

Casa went undefeated in league before losing in the North Coast Section semifinals to eventual champion Concord, 26-21.

Sherry will share signal-calling duties with El Molino’s Mike Pierson.

“We’re loaded at quarterback,” Tomlin said. “Both are excellent passers and we’ll throw the ball 40 or 50 times.”

As blitzing is not allowed in the game, Sherry and Pierson figure to have time to search for open receivers.

The SCL talent doesn’t end with the five Casa players and Pierson. The 40-man roster also includes seven other players that were selected All-Empire first team:

Kicker Lee Aranda (Windsor), linebacker Kevin Brown (Windsor), wide receiver Joe Douglass (El Molino), free safety Cooper Maloney (Analy), defensive lineman Gary Randolph (Healdsburg), center Ben Rhoades (El Molino) and running back Carson Seanor (Healdsburg).

The NBL, coached by Rancho Cotate assistant Gehrig Hotaling, boasts seven All-Empire first team selections:

Wide receiver-defensive back Brian Albin (Cardinal Newman), running back-defensive back Sam Atoe (Maria Carrillo), wide receiver Aaron Dhuyetter (Ukiah), defensive specialist Garrett Guanella (Newman), quarterback Pou Peleti-Gore (Rancho), defensive back Tim Moreno (Newman) and linebacker Mike Tuaua (Rancho).

“This is the third year I’ve been on the NBL coaching staff and this is most talented group we’ve had,” Hotaling said. “I think a lot of these guys have the ability to be big-time Division I players.
“Peleti-Gore can do so many things at quarterback, he opens up an offense. Our other strengths are our running backs and the defensive line.”

Hotaling said the key to the game is how the NBL secondary handles the SCL passing game.

“Not being able to blitz means Sherry and Pierson might have more time to pass,” he said. “Our secondary has to work to keep their receivers from getting open.”

The teams have been practicing nearly two weeks.

“That’s just enough time to put an offense and defense together,” Tomlin said. “We’re going to use the spread offense and I feel confident the way we’ve practiced that.”

As for defense, Tomlin has been impressed by the way Cole and Randolph have practiced.

“Cole is our defensive captain and is a leader,” he said. “Randolph has stood out and is going to play the line on both offense and defense. He seems to make every play.”
