All-Empire Badminton and Girls Player of the Year

Girls Player of the Year
ANGEL TRAN, Piner, Sr.

The rare three sport star, Angel Tran of Piner is best at badminton, the North Bay League’s strongest girl the past three seasons.

Earning a second Empire Girls’ Player of the Year honor, Tran won 74 of 88 matches in singles, doubles and mixed doubles over her career.

In singles at the North Coast Section tournament this season, Tran went 3-2, including losing to the eventual champion. Tran earned more points than any Empire team.

“I was really proud of myself with the competition level of where those girls are at. I needed dedication and motivation and just good conditioning,” Tran said.

Varsity basketball — Tran was honorable mention all-league — combined with rigorous practices and Tran’s maturity on the court completed the tennis player’s transformation into a great badminton player.

Tennis, though, will be Tran’s game at Santa Rosa Junior College. A two-time NBL singles semifinalist and All-Empire player, Tran starts training with the Bear Cubs in July.

“This was my last year on a high school badminton team,” she said. “That’s what really motivated me to do well.”
