All-Empire Swimming and Boys Swimmer of the Year

BOYS SWIMMING
Swimmer of the Year
SAM HALEY, Windsor, junior

For those mornings when his alarm clock begins groaning at a particularly cruel hour, Windsor’s Sam Haley has inspiration tacked up above his bed: A page from a magazine listing the times needed to qualify for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, Neb.

Haley is 2.81 seconds off the time needed to qualify in the 200-meter butterfly, but if his swimming resume is any indication he’ll reach his goal by next summer.

Haley recently finished his junior year by finishing third in the 200-yard individual medley at the ultra-competitive North Coast Section Championships. His performance capped a season in which he won Sonoma County League titles in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly while moving up to third all-time in the Empire in the 200 IM and seventh in the 500 freestyle.

Haley, who has been named the Empire’s Boys Swimmer of the Year, says swimming suits his goal-driven personality. He likes the fact that the clock doesn’t lie.

“Either you do it,” he said, “or you don’t.”

Said Windsor coach Catherine Davis: “Sam gets out of the water and it’s usually ‘That wasn’t good enough. What could I have done better?’”

Haley’s quest for success has served him well — in and out of the water.

The son of educators — his mom, Lisa, is an elementary school teacher and his dad, Robert, is the interim superintendent of Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District — Haley has a 4.5 GPA while taking honors classes in English, Government and Chemistry.

He has drawn interest from Ivy League schools, and Harvard and Princeton are among the colleges at the top of his list.
