All-Empire Track & Field Boys Athlete of the Year

Piner's Luis Luna

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD
Athlete of the Year
LUIS LUNA, Piner, junior

As Piner track coach Luis Rosales watched his star distance runner stick a record-breaking time in the 3,200 meters at the state meet in Fresno, he thought of how close it came to never happening.

Luna was so sick for the NBL league meet that Rosales wasn’t sure if he’d make it to school that day. Luna bowed out of his second-best event, the 1,600 — he had the best time in the Empire in that one, too — but managed to qualify in the 3,200.

No one was surprised when Luna later qualified for state, but his performance there was startling; he crossed in 8:55.43, easily best in Redwood Empire history. Luna finished sixth, but would have been state champion almost anywhere outside of California.

Rosales couldn’t have been prouder.

“The biggest assets he brings to the team are one, leadership, and two, just being a good person. If a guy breaks nine minutes, Luis is the first to congratulate him.”
