All-Empire small school softball

Player of the Year
Pitcher/first baseman, Calistoga, senior

We could have easily had co-MVPs among the small schools this year.

Nicole Taylor, the workhorse Calistoga pitcher, was 18-4 with an 0.46 ERA and 184 strikeouts in 122 1/3 innings.

But Nicole Taylor, Wildcats first baseman, was equally impressive — a .600 batting average, 41 RBIs, 11 doubles. Combine them into a single athlete and you have one of the NCL’s most impressive players in years — and a big reason Calistoga made it to the NCS Division 5 semifinals.

“Her leadership from the mound showed through this year,” Wildcats coach Jacob Blakeley said. “A lot of my other top players were freshmen. Without Nicole, they might not have had the season they had.”

Taylor, also an all-league volleyball player, received honorable mention in softball her junior season. This year, she picked it up a notch.

“She really stayed grounded,” Blakeley said. “If she got into a tough situation, she took care of business.”
