NCL volleyball: Edmonds leads Cougars to win


The Upper Lake women’s volleyball team overcame a 25-10 defeat in the first set, rallying for a win against Sonoma Academy on senior night.

Katherine Edmonds had a big night for Upper Lake with 16 kills and four aces, helping the Cougars to the 10-25, 29-27, 25-17, 19-25, 15-10 win.

Sonoma Academy’s Makenzie Floyd opened the first set by serving up a five-point scoring streak. The Coyotes strung together several great digs to thwart kill attempts by Edmonds. Sonoma’s Annie Backen helped close out the first set with a solid ace.

In the second set, Upper Lake’s Amber McQueen had several good blocks and kills to help the Cougars take the lead. Upper Lake led 23-18, but Sonoma came back to tie it at 24-24. The teams traded points before Upper Lake pulled away, 29-27.

The Cougars used a late run in the third set, outscoring the Coyotes 8-2 to turn a 17-15 advantage into a 25-17 win.

In a close fourth set, Sonoma’s Yanira Briceno had two clutch aces to give the Coyotes a 20-19 lead, which led to an impressive seven-point streak that ended with the 25-19 win for Sonoma Academy.

Behind the serving of Olivia Carter, Upper Lake took an 11-7 in the fifth set. BobbieLynn Collins had a huge kill to make it 13-10, setting up the Cougars for the 15-10 win.
