Cardinal Newman’s Tom Bonfigli, already the Redwood Empire’s winningest basketball coach, is in position to reach another milestone when the Rose City Tournament tips off today.

If his Cardinals can win twice during the three-day invitational, Bonfigli will reach the 600-win plateau. He’s been a head coach for 30 years, which means his teams have averaged more than 20 wins per season.

Newman will play Petaluma in the opener at 3:30 p.m. today. Other first-round matchups include Windsor-St. Mary’s of Albany (5 p.m.), Montgomery-San Marin (6:30 p.m.) and Rancho Cotate-Redwood (8 p.m.).

Bonfigli has coached 18 years at Newman and 12 at Justin-Siena. Of his 598 wins, 225 came at the Napa school.

The Lady Puma Invitational also begins today at Maria Carrillo. The host school plays Windsor at 4 p.m. followed by St. Vincent-Justin-Siena at 5:30. Then, it's Analy against Whitney at 7 with Montgomery facing Arcata in the 8:30 nightcap.
