Luna Starts Strong On Track

Joining an elite field, Piner great Luis Luna finished sixth at a two mile race in Seattle this weekend for a strong start to the track season.
The Empire record holder at 3,200 meters, Luna ran a 9:07.83 in the Brooks PR Invitational indoor race at the University of Washington. Finishing in the top half of a field of 14 featuring most of the nation's top prep distance runners, Luna was third among Californians in the race.
Luna's time also was notable because prep runners from California don't run many indoor meets.
The time at a distance just a few strides longer than the metric two mile puts the Piner senior on pace with his mark at the California state finals last season.
Running better than expected so early in the track season, Luna could threaten his Empire record time in the 3,200 meters of 8:55.43 he set as a junior.
Luna is coming off a great cross country campaign. He was named to the All Nor-Cal first team after capturing seventh at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships West Regional and running in the National Championships, where he placed 30th. Luna led Piner to a third place finish in the state Division 3 cross country finals.
