Santa Rosa U16 team takes north state title

The Santa Rosa TurfBreakers under-16 soccer team recently won the Association Cup for Northern California.

Armando Franco, one of the TurfBreakers’ coaches, credited goalkeeper Alberto Alvarado, who plays high school soccer at Montgomery, with leading the way in Saturday’s 1-0 Div. 3 championship victory over a team from Kingsburg in Fresno County.

“If they would have given an MVP trophy, he would have gotten it,” Franco said of the goalie.

The TurfBreakers’ Luis Vazquez scored the lone goal in the final.

The team plays home matches locally but travels to the Sacramento area for most of its road league games.

Its roster includes Alvarado, Jose Jimenez, Richard Alonso, Eric Romero, Alexis Carrillo and Adolfo Herrera from Montgomery; Darwin Ruiz, Jose Garcia and Wilson Mendoza from Elsie Allen; Lixandro Alcaraz and Kevin Leon from Rancho Cotate; Jose Chavez and Alfredo Aviles from Windsor; and Vazquez from Roseland University Prep.

Coaches are Franco, Gonzalo Jimenez and Joel Aviles.
