SSU softball: Lipperd pitches Seawolves to first-round playoff win

CARSON — Vanessa Currie’s solo home run was all starter Samantha Lipperd needed as fifth-seeded Sonoma State held on for a 1-0 victory over No. 4 Chico State in the first round of the NCAA Division II West 1 Regional.

The Seawolves (36-17), who have won nine straight, advanced to a winners’ bracket game against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 11 a.m. today.

Lipperd (31-10) threw her 16th shutout of the season and extended her shutout streak to a school-record 40« innings. She allowed five hits, walked four and struck out seven.

The game nearly got away from Lipperd in the fourth. But after the Wildcats loaded the bases with none out, Lipperd induced a short fly out and struck out two more to end the threat.

Chico State starter Sam Baker nearly matched Lipperd’s effort on the mound, but Currie’s leadoff homer in the sixth broke up her no-hitter.

Baker allowed just one other SSU hit, Megan Konieczka’s two-out double in the seventh.

Sonoma State is one win away from reaching Sunday’s sub-regional championship game. If the Seawolves lose the morning game today, they will play again at 4 p.m.
