Area high school and college football: Saturday's games

Santa Rosa JC (2-1) at
American River (3-0)

Last week: Santa Rosa lost to Sacramento City, 37-32. American River defeated Chabot, 45-24.
Kickoff: 1 p.m.
Notable: Playing the No. 3 team in Northern California on the road could translate into a long afternoon for the Bear Cubs … “They (American River) are physical and fast,” coach Keith Simons said. “They have one of the top running backs (Devontae Booker) in JC football and they will spread it out and then hand it to the RB.” … Booker is rushing for an average of 212 yards per game and has scored nine TDs … Santa Rosa trailed 21-0 at the half against Sac City … “We have a great group of players who are fun to coach,” Simons said. “As coaches we haven’t been able to say that the last couple of years. We are very young but have good sophomore leadership. We have handled adversity very well.” … The Bear Cubs lost three starting offensive linemen the first week of practice and another in a victory over Diablo Valley … Garrett Guanella’s 27 total tackles is second best in Northern California … QB David Sowards is throwing for a 229-yard per game average. Nine of his completions have been for touchdowns … Santa Rosa is ranked No. 10 in the latest NorCal standings.

I believe if our boys show up with their minds right, it will be a good match-up.” … Emery has a size advantage on the offensive line … Calistoga has lost two straight … The Wildcats trailed 14-6 at halftime against Willits, but allowed 20 unanswered points in the third quarter.
