With several former players in attendance, longtime coach and physical education teacher Izzy Derkos on Saturday had the Santa Rosa Junior College tennis courts named in his honor.
The dedication recognized more than four decades of service to the junior college.
Derkos, who teaches physical education part-time, began his tenure at SRJC in 1968 as a physical education teacher and assistant football coach. He took over the tennis program in 1971 and devoted all his coaching time to tennis from 1978 through 2003.
The Bear Cubs posted a 466-148 record in his time as tennis coach, including numerous Camino Norte and Bay Valley conference titles.
A Michigan transplant, Derkos arrived in Sonoma County in 1966. He taught English at Piner high, where he also was an assistant football and track coach.
Saturday’s event also was aimed at generating financial support for long needed improvements to the 8-court tennis complex.
The courts are off Scholars Road, near the center of the SRJC campus.
