Kelly Wilkinson scored the go-ahead goal in the second half as the Middletown Mustangs girls defeated visiting Cloverdale, 3-1, to advance to the finals of NCS Division 3.

Middletown will play Sonoma Academy for the title at 1 p.m. Saturday at Clear Lake High School.

With the score 1-1 and 15 minutes left in the game, Wilkinson scored an unassisted goal. Then with five minutes on the clock, Hannah Diaz scored an insurance goal from 40 yards out.

Ashland Welton gave the Mustangs a 1-0 halftime lead after getting a cross from Kaleigh Alzes.

Cloverdale’s goal came a few minutes into the second half on a penalty kick by Maddie Stewart.

“We started out slow but picked up intensity after halftime,” coach Lee Hoage said. “We played most of the second half in their end of the field and eventually got the go-ahead goal.”

The two NCL I teams played three times during the season with the Mustangs holding a 2-0-1 edge.

Top-seeded Middletown improved to 20-0-1. Cloverdale, the No. 4 seed, ends its season with a 17-3-3 mark.
