NCS Div. 6 volleyball championship: Three-peat for Anderson Valley

For the third straight year, Anderson Valley is the North Coast Section Division 6 volleyball champion.

The Panthers accomplished the three-peat Saturday night in Boonville, edging Rincon Valley Christian in five sets — 16-25, 25-22, 25-17, 15-25 and 15-10.

The match was a contrast in styles as taller RVC was the more offensive team while Anderson Valley excels at defense.

At the start, it appeared offense would prevail. Behind the ball striking of Hannah Andrews, the Eagles won the first set easily.

“After watching the first set, I don’t think there was anyone in the gym that thought Anderson Valley would come back,” winning coach Michael McDonald said. “They just dominated us.”

The Panthers regrouped in the second and third set as ball after ball came back at RVC.

“I think in the third set our defense was as good as it’s been all year,” McDonald said.

Rincon Valley rallied to take the fourth, setting up a game to 15 for the title.

Anderson Valley took an early lead in the fifth, but the Eagles tied it at 6-6 before the Panthers pulled away for good.

“The fifth set was a slugfest,” McDonald said. “Almost every point was a long rally.”

Finally, at match point, setter Stephany Garcia put the ball up for Alex Farber. The outside hitter got the kill shot and Anderson Valley had another championship.

The Panthers end the season with a 28-6 mark while RVC finishes 27-6.
