SRJC advances to state volleyball tournament

The Santa Rosa JC volleyball team is going back to the CCCAA State Tournament for the sixth year in a row.

On Tuesday night in Quincy, the Bear Cubs played a nearly flawless match while defeating Feather River in straight sets to advance. The scores were 25-22, 25-23 and 25-21.

The finals are Saturday and Sunday at Fullerton Community College. Two teams from the North and two from the South will participate.

In 2010 and ’11, Santa Rosa lost in the state title game. No team from Northern California has won a state title.
Against Feather River, Santa Rosa made only six errors in the match and had five hitters with at least five kills.

“This is a determined group,” coach Kelly Wood said. “All season, the goal has been to get back to the state tournament and they came out ready to play against Feather River.”

The win avenges an early-season loss to the Golden Eagles, one of the Bear Cubs’ two defeats. They’ve won 26 matches.

“Obviously, we’re a much better team than when we played them back in September,” Wood said. “We were missing several starters and hadn’t yet come together as a team.”

Feather River got the home match as the No. 2 seed in the NorCal bracket while Santa Rosa was ranked No. 3.

Olivia Urban led the big hitters with 11 kills. Briana Adviento had 10 put-aways to go along with four blocks. Megan Johnson contributed seven kills and seven digs while Kaitlyn Dunaway and Luisa McInnis each had five.

Setter Kiana Cassidy was credited with 25 assists.

Santa Rosa controlled the match from the outset, pulling away every time Feather River challenged. The home team never led.

"We wanted it more than they did," Bear Cubs libero Morgan Foley said. "We were way more mentally focused We've been runner-up twice at State. This team can win it."
