Cardinal Newman No. 3 in final football rankings

Empire teams made the final California prep football rankings by Cal-Hi Sports.

Cardinal Newman finished with the highest ranking at No. 3 in Division III North. The Cardinals went 11-2, reaching the North Coast Section semifinals where they fell to Marin Catholic in a high-scoring contest.

Rancho Cotate ended the season No. 5 in Division II North. The Cougars, North Bay League champions, went 12-1. The only loss came in the NCS finals to Clayton Valley.

Another one-loss Empire team was Analy, which finished No. 9 in Division III North. The Tigers, Sonoma County League champions, went 12-1. The lone loss came in the NCS semifinals to El Cerrito.

Also making a top 10 list was St. Vincent at No. 8 in Division IV North. The Mustangs, 10-3, fell in the NCS final to Ferndale.

Casa Grande made honorable mention in Division II North after going 7-4 on the 2012 season.

TENNIS COACH OPENING

Montgomery High is taking applications to fill a coaching vacancy for varsity boys tennis.

The tennis post opened up with the retirement of Paul Cornwall, the longtime Vikings coach. Cornwall retired from teaching at Santa Rosa Middle School and from leading the Montgomery tennis squad.
