Hammell, Reynolds named to Cal-Hi state teams; Petaluma team wins state tournament

Helping lead Cardinal Newman to the state championship game earned senior forward Corey Hammell an all-state honor.

Hammell was named to the Cal-Hi Sports All-State Second Team for Division 4 Boys Basketball. Hammell was the leading scorer on the Cardinal Newman team reached the California Interscholastic Federation championship contest, where it lost to Pacific Hills.

Hammell also was The Press Democrat's All-Empire Large School Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

Recognized for his rebounding and defense as much as his offense, Hammell played a major part in Cardinal Newman finishing 32-4, a record win total for Empire large school boys basketball.

Cardinal Newman boys basketball coach Tom Bonfigli earlier was recognized as the Cal-Hi Division 4 Boys Basketball Division 4 coach of the year.

REYNOLDS EARNS DUAL HONOR

Two-sport standout Nick Reynolds, from Rancho Cotate High, has been recognized by Cal-Hi Sports for his play in both football and basketball.

Reynolds was named to the Cal-Hi Sports Grid-Hoop Team.

In football, Reynolds was an All-Empire offensive lineman and also led Rancho Cotate in sacks from the defensive line. Rancho Cotate reached the North Coast Section Division 2 title game before falling to Clayton Valley, the Cougars' only loss in the 2012 season.

In basketball, Reynolds led a young Rancho Cotate squad in scoring and rebounding, averaging more than 14 points and nearly eight rebounds per game.

EARTHQUAKES WIN STATE TOURNEY

The Petaluma Earthquakes, a 10-and-under girls fast pitch softball travel team, won the California state championship tournament over the weekend at Sunnyvale.

The Earthquakes, who are managed by Mike Machado, emerged from the 11-team, double-elimination tournament with a 6-1 record to claim the championship.

Petaluma defeated the San Lorenzo Heat, 18-6, on Sunday in the deciding game.

It was the sixth tournament of the year for the Earthquakes, who won four of them with a combined tournament record of 30-4.
