PD Preps weekly basketball rankings

LARGE SCHOOL BOYS

1. CARDINAL NEWMAN

Cardinals protected their top ranking with victory over Montgomery on Monday night.

2. MONTGOMERY

Vikings will get another shot at Newman on Feb. 4.

3. ANALY

Tallest team in the Empire has won five straight. Can’t envision the Tigers losing a Sonoma County League game.

4. PINER

Vaulted into the rankings with a 16-point win over Healdsburg last Friday. Natu Hezchias one of the best players in the SCL.

5. HEALDSBURG

Last week was not a good one for the Greyhounds as they lost two of three and beat Petaluma by only two points.

GAME OF THE WEEK

First place in the SCL will likely be on the line when Piner visits Analy on Friday night.

LARGE SCHOOL GIRLS

1. SANTA ROSA

Panthers have won eight straight. Juniors Morgan Bertsch (15) and Katie Daly (10) lead the offense.

2. MONTGOMERY

Lost to Santa Rosa by three points on Jan. 2. Vikings will get chance for revenge on Jan. 22 when Panthers visit.

3. CARDINAL NEWMAN

Cardinals had 10-game winning streak snapped last Thursday at the hands of Maria Carrillo (38-28).

4. CASA GRANDE

In the past month, seven of Gauchos’ last nine games have been decided by five points or fewer. Casa lost five of those.

5. PETALUMA

Trojans 7-0 on the road. Super soph Joelle Krist is leading the way.

GAME OF THE WEEK

Top-ranked Santa Rosa could get tested Friday night at Cardinal Newman.

SMALL SCHOOL BOYS

1. WILLITS

Wolverines can thank Jon Montez for keeping them on top. Last Friday, the 6-foot-5 junior calmly sank three straight free throws with 2.4 seconds remaining to give Willits a 55-54 victory over Cloverdale.

2. RINCON VALLEY CHRISTIAN

During current five-game win streak, Eagles’ average margin of victory is 21 points. Garrett Robert had 17 points, 10 steals and eight assists in last Friday’s win over Technology.

3. CLOVERDALE

Following the crushing loss to No. 1 Willits, the Eagles must play road games at Lower Lake and Middletown this week.

4. MENDOCINO

Four players on nine-man roster are averaging double figures: Nicolas Knoebber (13), Cody Lewis (13), Rhydon Call (12) and Justin Garcia (11). Cardinals still unbeaten in NCL III after 18-point win over Point Arena last Friday.

5. MIDDLETOWN

Strange stat: Mustangs 0-4 at home and 6-1 on the road. Last week, they chalked up wins at Fort Bragg (46-30) and St. Helena (37-29).

GAME OF THE WEEK

Cloverdale visits Middletown on Friday.

SMALL SCHOOL GIRLS

1. WILLITS

Wolverines have won six straight, including three last week. The team is averaging 54 points per game with Alicia Mehtlan (16) and Samantha DelBello (12) leading the way.

2. SONOMA ACADEMY

Willow Gallagher is the team’s top scorer at 16.8 while Tori Gimbel is averaging nine rebounds per game.

3. POINT ARENA

Pirates sailing along on eight-game win streak. Taylor Dilks credited with 10 steals last week vs. Mendocino. The senior is averaging 15 points per game.

4. LOWER LAKE

Junior Zobee Miller averaging 14 rebounds per game to go along with 13 points. Trojans won three games last week.

5. MIDDLETOWN

Mustangs sport 5-0 home record. Ashley Hart and Jenny Hoeffer each averaging nearly 10 points.

GAME OF THE WEEK

Sonoma Academy at Roseland Prep. Both schools go into Tuesday night’s contest with 4-0 NCL II records.
