Montgomery, playing one of its best defensive games of the season, defeated visiting Maria Carrillo, 42-21, Tuesday night.

The win keeps the Vikings tied with Santa Rosa atop the North Bay League standings with one game to play. On Thursday, Montgomery travels to Casa Grande and Santa Rosa hosts Cardinal Newman.

The Vikings held Maria Carrillo to eight points in the first half while they scored 19. The Pumas were unable to get the lead under double digits after intermission.

“It was an excellent team effort for us,” coach Steve Bell said. “On defense, we took away the lanes and allowed them very few second shots.”

Montgomery pressed most of the way. Claire Donnelly led the Vikings with 14 points. Shelby Lord was Carrillo’s top scorer with four.

Montgomery’s record is 20-5 and 11-2 in league. The Vikings have won eight straight.

The Pumas dropped to 14-10 and 7-6. They have lost five in a row.
