Capping the finest Mendocino College women’s basketball season ever, five players earned all-conference honors.

Named to the Bay Valley Conference first team were Elisa Vargas, Cara Watts and Crystal Cervantes. Earning Honorable Mention were Michelle Chown and Jonesha Beasley.

Coach Jody Steliga was BVC coach of the year.

Vargas, from Cardinal Newman, led Mendocino in scoring in her first year with the Eagles. Watts, a sophomore out of Windsor High, anchored the Eagles’ post play. Cervantes, from Stockton, shared point-guard duties and was one of the Bay Valley’s top 3-point shooters.

Both Chown, from McKinleyville, and Beasley, out of Lower Lake High, were recognized for their defensive efforts.

Mendocino was deep and talented, taking the program’s first Bay Valley Conference crown and winning a record 19 games against eight losses. Mendocino made its first-ever appearance in the NorCal half of the California Community College Athletic Association tournament.
