Baseball: SSU on track for NCAA Div. II tournament

Coming off a strong home series, Sonoma State baseball is ranked third in the initial West Region poll, giving the Seawolves a shot at the NCAA Division II tournament.

The poll is a weekly snapshot of the region’s top eight teams. The top six squads in the final rankings earn bids to the NCAA tournament, which is three weeks away.

Sonoma State helped its cause by taking three of four from then nationally ranked Cal State Los Angeles in the Seawolves’ final home series. With six wins in the past seven contests, Sonoma State improved to 27-15 overall and 19-13 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

On the road for the season’s final eight regular season contests, Sonoma State first visits Chico State this weekend. Chico is ranked second in the West Region poll. The set’s final game is Sunday evening at Raley Field, home of the Sacramento River Cats, the top farm club for the Oakland Athletics.

Topping the West Region poll is Cal State Monterey Bay. Roudning out the rankings: Grand Canyon, Dixie State, UC San Diego, Hawaii Pacific and Cal State Los Angeles.
