Softball: SSU hanging tough, splits doubleheader

Splitting a pair of games Friday aided Sonoma State’s bid for a return to softball postseason play.

Sonoma State took the back end of a doubleheader at Cal State Monterey Bay and looks to stay on track with another twin bill at Monterey Bay today.

The win lifted Sonoma into a tie for third place in the CCAA. The Seawolves need a victory or Cal State Dominguez Hills loss to clinch a spot in next weekend’s conference tournament in Stockton.

Ranked fourth in the latest NCAA Division II West Region poll, Sonoma State has struggled of late. The Seawolves have two wins in their past 11 games. Sonoma State is 33-17 overall and 20-14 in the CCAA.

Still, despite the rough stretch, Sonoma State would make a fifth consecutive NCAA tournament appearance by finishing in the West Region top eight.
