Back in the NCAA softball tournament, Sonoma State looks to break through the regional round.

The Seawolves open play at noon today against conference rival Cal State Dominguez Hills. Regional host Dixie State takes on Hawaii-Hilo in today’s other contest.

The double-elimination West 2 Regional is in St. George, Utah. Play continues through Sunday.

The winner advances to face the survivor of the West 1 Regional, hosted by Humboldt State, in Arcata. The best in the West moves on to the NCAA Division II Softball Championship Tournament finals, in Salem, Va.

Selected to the NCAA tournament for the sixth time in seven seasons, Sonoma State has not advanced beyond first-round regional action before.

The Seawolves face a familiar foe in Utah. Sonoma State defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills in three of four meetings in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. Dixie State edged the Seawolves at a tournament in Las Vegas.

Each winner will advance to the super regionals May 17-18 where they will take on the respective winner from their region (i.e., Atlantic 1 vs. Atlantic 2). The finals will be held May 23-27.
